FLOYD BECKER

1930 - 2017

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, Floyd Becker. Born in Empress, Alberta, on December 7, 1930, Dad was raised on the family farm as the youngest of nine children. His journey West at age 17 took him to Ocean Falls, BC, where he worked in the pulp and paper industry and met and married our mother, Frances, his wife of 64 years. In 1950, they made Nanaimo their home and raised their family in the Harewood District. Community minded, he enjoyed coaching little league softball and always had time for his neighbours. Mom and Dad spent many Saturday nights dancing and socializing with their friends.

Dad was employed by MacMillan Bloedel at Harmac for 37 years. He took great pride in his responsibilities and crew achievements as Shift Foreman at #3 Wood Room. After retirement, he pursued the simple pleasures of life - time spent with family, his home and garden, woodworking, watching old-time music videos on Youtube, meeting up with friends at his exercise club, and morning coffee at McDonald’s. He was always expressing wonder and appreciation for the beauty of this world.

Dad was an active Freemason and proud member of Doric Lodge#18, Nanaimo, serving as Master of the Lodge in 1992. He earned his 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and was Grand Standard Bearer for Grand Lodge BC in 1999 and District Deputy Grand Master, District 5, in 2001. For his many years of leadership and volunteerism with the Freemasons’ Cancer Van Driver Program, he was awarded a special Certificate of Recognition by the City of Nanaimo during its 125th Birthday Celebration.

Predeceased by Frances, and son, Allen, Dad will be dearly missed by his son, Robert, and daughters, Brenda (Richard), Janice (Peter), and Donna, as well as grandchildren, Laura, Julia, Michael and Dustin.

Those who knew him well will remember our father’s sensitive yet disciplined nature, his cornball humour and ... his love of plaid. There will be no funeral by request but in remembrance there will be a tea reception on Tuesday, April 4th, 1:00 to 4:00 pm, at Doric Lodge, 620 Morpeth Avenue, in Nanaimo. If you so wish, please join our family’s desire to wear plaid in his honour.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Masonic Community Charities Fund (Cancer Car Program) or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
