Charles Murray Major Madsen

Murray Madsen passed away at Nanaimo Regional Hospital on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the age of 86. Murray was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. He was the son of Harold William and Louise Madsen (nee Scullin) and the oldest of five children, Beatrice, Eleanor, Freda (deceased), and Harold.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 18, saw active service overseas in World War 2, and completed a twenty-eight year distinguished career ending it as Commanding Officer, RCAF Base Baldy Hughes. Murray retired from the RCAF in 1970, with the rank of Major.

He joined the communications division of British Columbia Hydro in 1970, retiring in 1983.

Murray is survived by his wife Bette, their daughters Cheryl Louise, Susanne Arlene (John) and son James Douglas (Yvonne) along with five grandchildren Tracie, Brad (Toni), Debbie (Rod), Shawn, and Julia, as well as ten great grandchildren, including Kevan and Brittany who live in Nanaimo.

Murray served as a member of the United Services Institute of Nanaimo, the 808 Thunderbird Wing, and Power Pioneers of B.C. Hydro; organizations devoted to volunteering in the community.

Murray will be remembered by all who knew him, for his tremendous work ethic, complete commitment to any task he took on, and for his unswervingly positive attitude.

His spirit will continue to walk along with all who had the privilege of knowing, a truly special human being.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Cancade and the nursing staff on the 6th floor of Nanaimo Regional Hospital for their special care, kindness and support. No service at his request. A celebration of Murray’s life will be held in August for his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
