CHARLES (Charlie) KALMAN TOTH

TOTH, Charles (Charlie) Kalman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Charlie passed away peacefully on December 14, 2009 in his 79th year, surrounded by his family, after a valiant battle with cancer. He is lovingly remembered by his brother Bill Toth; sister, Perry Cote; sons Chuck Toth, Craig Duncan (Bernie), Stewart Duncan (Debbie), Dave Duncan (Vi); daughters: Sandra Duncan, Barbara Tustin (Bob), Jackie Nault (Rene) and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charlie is predeceased by his parents; wives: Barbara Duncan and Gloria Toth and his sister Rosie Twerdohlib. Charlie grew up in Port Colborne Ontario, the youngest of four siblings. After marrying Gloria in 1955, his career with INCO took him to Thompson, Manitoba in 1960. After Gloria’s passing in 1968, Charlie became very active in the local baseball, hockey and curling scene. He and his good friend Red Sangster worked tirelessly on behalf of the teams. In 2003 he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Charlie retired from INCO in 1985 and in 1988 he and Barbara retired to Nanaimo BC. They continued to travel and his happiest times were spent with family and friends. Charlie was the life of any party and being with him always guaranteed a good time. Through his involvement as a Freemason and Shriner at Ashler Lodge No. 3, Charlie continued to be active in the community. The family extends a special thanks to Doctors Denegri, Carruthers and Calvin, the nurses and EMS staff at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital for their compassionate care. A viewing will be held on Sunday, December 20th from 7 – 9pm at First Memorial Funeral Home, 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC and a celebration of life will be held in Charlie’s honour on Monday, December 21, 2009 at 1 pm at the same location.
