It is with sad hearts that we say goodbye to our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Carrie Bishop. Carrie died in her sleep at the age of 92 years old. This matriarch of the Bishop family was born in Rama, Saskatchewan to Joseph Serron and Tekla Krysak and raised along with her brothers and sisters, Ann, Olive, Dan, Helen, Walter, Sophie , Michael and Theo. Carrie worked in the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg and grew to love traveling and dancing. She met Collin Bishop who worked in the coal mine in Shilo, Manitoba and they married in 1947. As work ended in Shilo, they moved to Bralorne BC to mine. That is where their first child, Laara, was born. After moving to Nanaimo to sell insurance Collin and Carrie had six business in Nanaimo. Collin came back from the Korean war just as John, the second child, was born. Carrie always worked hard, did not let anything go to waste and was a wonderful role model in financial management, cooking, sewing and problem solving. Sheila and Sadie the third and fourth children were born and the family built three houses, gardened, fished and always kept busy. When Collin died in 1972, Carrie took over the dry cleaner and laundry business and became the first women in BC to have a third class steam engineer certificate. Carrie met Frank Matschulat around 1984 and the two of them travelled to 57 countries over the next 25 years. Carrie was thrilled by her grandchildren, Victor, Casey, Reba, Ean, Lisa, Michael, James and great grand children, Violet, Kiriva, Samoria, Othana and Saorsa. Carrie was active in the Catholic church, St, Ann’s Convent, the Branch 10 Legion and the Rock Hounds. Carrie enjoyed her tenants, exchange students and supporting her world vision child until the child became a teacher. She will be remembered for her zest for life, her desire to have some fun and her enjoyment of nice things even when life was not always easy for her. Her stories will live within our memories and we will carry some of her with us forever. A service will be held on Friday June 2 at St. Peter’s Church in Nanaimo. Viewing at 10am, Service at 11am followed by reception and internment.
