Master Mariner, on the 28th of November 2004 weighed anchor for the last time while on holiday in Elgin, Scotland. Michael fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bournemouth, England on August 13, 1932. Michael attended Warrick School for Boys from 1940-1946 and the Warsash Maritime Centre from 1947-1948. Michael spent half his life at sea sailing with Bowater’s, Clan Line, Furness Withey, Nigerian National and others before immigrating to Canada in 1968. More recently he worked as an independent Marine Surveyor in Vancouver, BC (1970), a Supercargo for Pacific International Freight Lines (Morflot, 1970-74) and a Loading Master for Canadian Transport Ltd. (McMillan Bloedel 1974-1995). He was a longtime member of the BC Supercargos Association, the Company of Master Mariners and the Maritime Institute. Michael is predeceased by his baby daughter Lorraine in 1961. He is survived by his daughter Jane Douglas and son Paul; sisters, Susan Long and Ruth Greig. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Natalie and Rebecca Douglas and Christopher Greig. A private service was held in Elgin, Scotland and a private service will be held in Nanaimo. The family would like to thank Drs. Weinerman, Love, Kingston, Williams, Clark and Livingstone for their professionalism and care during this very difficult time. We would also like to thank the nurses at Dr. Gray’s Hospital, Elgin, Scotland, BC Cancer Clinic. Victoria and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. A special thank you to his family and friends in Canada and around the world. Michael touched many hearts and was grateful for all the support he received. A Celebration of Life is planned for January 22, 2005 at the Grand Hotel in Nanaimo between 1-4pm for all who would like to attend.
