The world’s largest private residential ship can go pretty much anywhere, and this week, it’s chosen Nanaimo.

The World, a 644-foot vessel, is stopped at Nanaimo’s cruise ship terminal today (July 13) and tomorrow.

Launched in 2002, the World has been continuously circumnavigating the globe. The ship includes 165 condominiums, with residents from 45 countries. Some residents live permanently aboard the ship while most make periodical stays throughout the year.

“We are privileged to host the World with her travel-experienced passengers on this reputable luxury vessel,” said Bernie Dumas, president and CEO of the Nanaimo Port Authority, in a press release. “The World is a one-of-a-kind vessel and frequents the beautiful British Columbia coast, a favourite destination for passengers. It is important that we showcase our customary hospitality, which Nanaimo is known for, to inspire passengers to return to central Vancouver Island.”

About 180 passengers were expected to arrive at the Nanaimo port call. The port arranged travel counsellors, a photo op with RCMP in red serge, and also set up a shuttle service for passengers.

The World is operated by ROW Management Ltd. based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and flies the flag of the Bahamas. The vessel is 196 metres (644 feet) long, 30m (98 feet) wide, and has 12 decks and approximately 280 crew.
