Two Nanaimo drivers were sent to the hospital for observation after an early morning crash at old Island Highway and Enterprise Way.

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a collision that happened at about 6:55 a.m. Thursday morning.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said a 55-year-old female driver in a Nissan pickup was turning left from a northbound lane onto Enterprise Way and was struck almost broadside by a 38-year-old male driving southbound in a Toyota FJ Cruiser sport-utility vehicle. The SUV rolled three times, including after hitting a tree, and landed in the grass about five metres from the front doors of Browns Social House at Metral Station.

The crash shut down sections of highway and Enterprise Way for 30-45 minutes.

O’Brien said the drivers were out of their cars walking around and both were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation with possible soft-tissue injury.

It’s not noted who is at fault and the collision is still under investigation. O’Brien said investigators believe speed was a factor.
