Last night’s multiple-vehicle crash on the Nanaimo Parkway was caused when a car crossed into oncoming traffic.

The accident, which happened Wednesday at about 7:40 p.m. at the Jingle Pot Road intersection, resulted in two drivers being taken to hospital.

“A vehicle heading southbound crossed the median and other vehicles trying to avoid the collision ended up getting into separate incidents, but the person continued southbound and was in a head-on with another vehicle,” said Cpl. Jon Stuart, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

One of the drivers taken to hospital has since been released, while another suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Two cars were wrecked in the crash and another vehicle also sustained damage. Northbound traffic on the parkway was shut down completely while emergency crews attended and cleared the scene.

Stuart said investigators haven’t yet determined why the southbound car went over the median. He said neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors.
