Trucker under investigation for Malahat fuel truck crash, spill

A 33-year-old Nanaimo man is under investigation for alleged impaired driving after a fuel truck flipped on the Malahat section of the  Trans-Canada Highway.

The crash happened at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday when a southbound Columbia Fuels truck flipped on its side near the entrance to Goldstream Park.

The truck’s tank trailer was damaged in the crash, spilling an estimated 30,000 litres of gasoline into the Goldstream River. Environmental surveys are being conducted to determine the effects of the spill.

The wreckage of the truck blocked the highway in both directions until late Sunday afternoon, forcing drivers travelling to or from Victoria to take the Mill Bay/Brentwood Bay ferry to bypass the Malahat.

West Shore RCMP members arrested the driver at Victoria General Hospital where he was being treated for minor injuries suffered in the crash.

His name has been withheld until charges are laid.

The Vancouver Island criminal crash investigation team, RCMP South Island traffic services and the integrated collision and re-constructionist section are leading the criminal investigation into the crash.
