Police are noticing an increase in thefts across Nanaimo and are warning residents against leaving valuables unattended, especially in vehicles.

According to a press release Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said cellphones, purses, wallets and coins are the most common items stolen from cars and trucks. Furthermore, if people think they have a good hiding spot for their valuables, criminals have likely figured it out already.

Stolen items are often found in drug houses, as they are exchanged for illegal drugs and personal information stolen from wallets and purses can be used to create bank accounts and lines of credit in a person’s name according to Nanaimo RCMP.

Items have been known to be stolen from backyards and sheds as well.

Police recommend not leaving valuable items in your car and do not attempt to hide them; either remove them entirely or lock items in your trunk.

They suggest engraving valuables with an identifying number and taking a pictures of items. They also recommend backyard sheds are locked up as criminals prefer lawn-care items, ladders and bikes. Individuals are being encouraged to register their bikes with the 529 Garage app.

In the event of a theft or break in, it is important to report the incident to the Nanaimo RCMP as it will give them snapshot of where crime is occurring and how best to allocate resources.

If you see suspicious activity, you can call Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
