Saws, welders, lathes coming to Nanaimo school district with provincial grant

Nanaimo school district will be able to purchase new trades training equipment after a funding announcement from the B.C. government Tuesday.

According to a Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Responsible for Labour press release, the district will receive $629,153 over the next three years for items such as table saws, MIG welders and wood lathes.

It is part of a commitment of $835,000 to schools in Nanaimo and Cowichan and an overall commitment of $15 million to schools in B.C., the ministry said.

Through the Youth Trades Capital Equipment Program, $7.5 million will be divvied out in the 2016-17 school year to B.C. schools, followed by $4 million in 2017-18 and $3.5 million in 2018-19.
