All Regional District of Nanaimo water service areas will be subject to Stage 3 watering restrictions effective Saturday (Aug. 5).

Since May, service areas have been in Stage 2 restrictions, which sees odd-number addresses watering on odd-number days and even-number addresses on even-number days. Stage 3 is similar to that, the regional district said in a press release.

“Stage 3 restrictions maintain the same even- and odd- day watering framework as Stage 2, yet encourage residents to further reduce water use in order to defer a comprehensive watering ban,” the regional district said. “Water demand has been higher than average for this time of year, resulting in low reservoir levels and increased strain on wells, pumps and other infrastructure. Meanwhile, record-high temperatures are forecasted and the fire danger rating remains extreme.”

There is flexibility, but reducing water consumption is critical, said the regional district, which suggests reducing lawn watering; avoidance of washing vehicles and boats (save for headlights and windows); sweeping decks, as opposed to washing and adding mulch or topsoil to assist in water retention.

The regional district water service areas include Decourcey in Yellow Point.

As of Wednesday, the City of Nanaimo and District of Lantzville were both in Stage 2 restrictions.
