Regional District of Nanaimo will spend a total of $170,000 over the next two years to provide security at its landfill in Cedar.

A current deal with Securiguard is set to end on Aug. 31 and at the July 24 regular meeting, regional district directors approved a two-year deal with Neptune Security Service, as recommended by the regional district solid waste management select committee. The deal begins Sept. 1 and ends Aug. 31, 2020.

In addition, the regional district general manager of regional and community utilities and director of finance have both been granted authority to extend the deal an additional two years if it is deemed necessary.

According to a staff report, the landfill has experienced vandalism and damage to buildings, equipment and infrastructure as well as theft while it is closed and security has curbed attempted break-ins and vandalism.

Having security also helps mitigate risk of fire as staff are continually monitoring, the report said.

The deal breaks down to $85,000 a year and money will come from the RDN’s solid waste budget.
