A petition aiming to add ambulance paramedics to the Fire and Police Services Collective Bargaining Act has fallen short.

The petition, started on Jan. 9, required support of 10 per cent of registered voters in each of B.C.’s 85 electoral districts and the proponent said it did not receive the requisite signatures, according to Andrew Watson, Elections B.C. spokesman.

The petition was submitted Monday, Watson said.

“Our review process for determining [if] a petition meets the requirements of the Recall and Initiative Act stops if it’s clear that the proponent will not meet the requirements … because the proponent reported that they did not have the required number of signatures in each electoral district in the province, at that point we declared that the petition was unsuccessful. No further verification took place,” said Watson.

The proponent submitted 11 boxes of petitions and told Elections B.C. there were about 230,000 signatures, Watson said.
