Work is complete on a major makeover for what was formerly one of the highest crash rate intersections on the Island.
According to a B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure press release Monday, improvements made to the old Island Highway, Northfield Road and Boundary Avenue have made the intersection safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
Improvements from the $4.1 million project, jointly funded by the city ($2.25 million) and the province ($1.85 million), focused on safety, pedestrian access and traffic flow with a new acceleration lane from Northfield Road onto the old Island Highway, a dedicated left turn lane from Northfield Road to Boundary Avenue, a new pedestrian/cyclist rail crossing and improved access to a pedestrian underpass and a new sidewalk on Northfield Road.
Left and right turn lanes from Northfield Road onto the old Island Highway and a dedicated left-turn signal from the old Island Highway onto Northfield Road were also renovated.
