The Nanaimo News Bulletin continues to live up to its tradition of journalistic excellence.
The newspaper won the top prize for general excellence in the largest circulation category at Saturday’s B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association annual Ma Murray awards.
The News Bulletin beat fellow Black Press publications the Kelowna Capital News and the Surrey-North Delta Leader for the honour.
In summarizing their choice, the judges wrote: “With a clean front page, good photography and a complete understanding of events, this is a superb newspaper. Ads do not overpower news elements on the pages. Community news stories are well-wrtiten and editorial pages are easily read. Section headings separate but do not overpower either. Classifieds are neat.
“This is a great newspaper to read.”
Mitch Wright, managing editor, said the award is shared by everyone who works at the paper.
“We all strive each day to put together the best possible newspaper for our community and our readers,” he said. “Winning this award, against some of the biggest and best community newspapers in the province, is a huge accomplishment and a credit to the work everyone here does day-in and day-out.”
Wright added that the News Bulletin’s readership also deserve credit, noting that both news tips and feedback from readers are crucial to staying on top of what’s happening in the community.
