Harewood Centennial Park’s playground has gotten a makeover that will help make it accessible to more children.
According to a City of Nanaimo press release, the playground has been upgraded with 1,450 square metres of rubber surfacing, new swings including accessible swings, and a wheelchair-accessible ‘Orbit’ play feature.
The city said the improvements were possible thanks to a partnership with the Lions Club of Nanaimo and Kal Tire’s Replay Fund. The Lions Club provide $31,200 of the $75,000 project budget and the Kal Tire fund contributed a $5,000 grant.
The release notes that approximately 670 tires were recycled to create the new playground surfacing.
“These latest additions to the playground provide additional play opportunities for citizens with diverse abilities and show what can be done when community partners work together,” said Mayor Leonard Krog in the release.
