A group of off-roading enthusiasts who failed to return home to Nanaimo Monday were found safe and sound early this morning (May 2).

According to Nanaimo RCMP, two men, age 39 and 55, one of their sons and his friend, headed out for a ride in a remote area south west of Nanaimo Lakes Road and told told their families they would be back before dark.

Their families were initially not too concerned when they failed to arrive as expected as both men were experienced off-roaders and know the area.

Their families waited until the early morning before calling police, who notified Nanaimo Search and Rescue.

Twenty search and rescue volunteers set out at daybreak from the Barsby Lake area to search for the off-roaders who were found just after 6 a.m.

Their vehicle had broken down and rather than walk out in darkness, the group, which had brought extra food, clothing and safety supplies with them, decided to sleep in the vehicle until daybreak.

“This is a great example of a short day trip taking an unexpected turn,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “The group, however, had planned for just this and were no worse for wear when located. Cell coverage is spotty at best in the area they were located in so they could not rely on using their phones to be located. Staying put was their best course of action.”
