Preparation on the part of two hikers made for a speedy search-and-retrieval operation by Nanaimo Search and Rescue on the Weekend.

According to a Nanaimo Search and Rescue press release, rescue technicians were called out to Mount Benson Regional Park on Sunday at about 11 a.m. by B.C. Ambulance Services to help locate and transfer an injured hiker.

Earlier in the day two men left Witchcraft Lake to summit Mount Benson and chose Gordie’s Trail for the final ascent, but within 500 metres of the summit, one the men collapsed and was injured by the fall.

His companion called 911 and Nanaimo Search and Rescue was able to find the men quickly because the call for help included the identification number on the nearest trail marker. The numbers are unique to each location along the trail and provide first responders with geo-referenced data to help locate lost or injured hikers.

The victim was given emergency first aid and transported down the mountain, a two-hour journey due to the difficult terrain, to B.C. Ambulance paramedics.

Nanaimo Search and Rescue credits the hikers with being prepared for their outing with ample food and water, a cell phone and suitable attire.

Moving into the fall season, Nanaimo Search and Rescue reminds outdoor enthusiasts to be prepared for weather extremes, create trip plans and inform people of those plans and carry 10 essential items: a charged flashlight, fire-making kit, a signalling device such as a mirror or whistle, extra food and water, navigation and communication aids, a first aid kit, emergency shelter and a pocket knife.
