Two hikers found their way out of the backcountry with help from Nanaimo Search and Rescue volunteers this week.

The hikers were returning from an outing to Ammonite Falls Regional Park on Wednesday afternoon when they lost their way.

After wandering around for about two hours, they called Nanaimo RCMP for help at about 8 p.m. Police called Nanaimo Search and Rescue volunteers who followed the hikers’ cell phone signal to help narrow down the search area.

Hard rain was reported by the searchers as the weather continued to deteriorate throughout the evening.

Searchers finally found the hikers unhurt at about 11 p.m.

“The hikers called RCMP early on in their ordeal, which significantly aided in locating them. They were found in good spirits but cold,” Ken Duncan, Nanaimo Search and Rescue search manager, said in a press release.

Nanaimo RCMP remind outdoor enthusiasts to be prepared when trekking in the backcountry. Wear appropriate clothing, anticipate poor weather and carry extra water and food. A detailed written trip plan left with a friend provides crucial information to rescue crews should you become injured or lost.

Further information about filing trip plans can be found at Nanaimo Search and Rescue’s website at www.nanaimosar.bc.ca.
