Nanaimo RCMP are seeking help from the public following a hit and run accident last week.
The incident took place approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 18 at the intersection of Bruce Avenue and Seventh Street and involved a bicycle and a vehicle. The cyclist was not seriously injured, but was treated at hospital for scrapes and cuts. The driver didn’t remain at the scene, according to police.
“The 25-year-old cyclist later told police he was riding his bike to work and admittedly did not stop before proceeding through the stop sign. A black SUV, travelling east on Seventh Street, struck the cyclist, causing him to fall off his bike and onto the roadway. The female driver was overheard saying ‘Oh my God,’ before continuing east on Seventh Street,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release.
O’Brien said the cyclist didn’t get the vehicle make or licence plate number, although there could be damage to the front grill.
“The cyclist is lucky his injuries were not more severe,” said O’Brien. “Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians who are involved in a collision, regardless of who may appear to be at fault, are required by law to remain at the scene, render assistance as necessary, and provide their name, address, and vehicle insurance information.”
