Southbound lanes on the Nanaimo Parkway were closed after a cyclist suffered critical injuries in an accident this morning (Sept. 15).

The cyclist collided with a cube van at 6 a.m. today, said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release.

“Police, fire and B.C. Paramedics attended. The cyclist was transported to a local hospital by attending paramedics and was then airlifted to Victoria General Hospital. There is currently no update on [the person’s] condition. The driver of the cube van was not injured,” O’Brien said.

The victim, a 55-year-old Nanaimo man, remains in hospital in critical condition, according to an RCMP information update issued this afternoon.

The victim’s family has been notified.

The southbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway that were closed for several hours for the police investigation were reopened to traffic at around 10 a.m.
