A Nanaimo girl’s cover of a pop singer’s song is catching the attention of thousands of people around the world.

Jayda Lee, 9, posted a YouTube video of her covering the song Kid in a Candy Store by JoJo Siwa, an American singer, back on May 20. As of July 12, the video has more than 15,000 views and hundreds of comments.

“This just blew my mind. She’s used to like 15 views or like 50 views. I couldn’t believe it,” said Sarah Doyle, Lee’s mother.

Doyle said her daughter has been singing since she was about two years old and likes to post cover videos and the odd original song on YouTube.

In the five-minute video, Lee can be see singing and dancing along. Doyle said her daughter wants to have a career in music someday and has been enrolled at Headliners and Long and McQuade music schools.

“She’s a natural,” Doyle said. “She’s just really comfortable on stage.”

Doyle says Lee would love to one day hear or meet JoJo Siwa, who is also an actress and YouTuber, best known for her appearance on Dance Moms, who was named Favorite Viral Music Artist at the 2017 Kids’ Choice Awards.

“That would just make her cry,” Doyle said.
