Nanaimo’s gardeners occasionally garner bragging rights for some huge samples from home-grown harvests.

Ray Doumont stopped by News Bulletin offices Thursday morning to show off what he said is the single biggest tomato he has ever grown.

The massive fruit was fleshed out on a vine Doumont planted in his garden near Nanaimo North Town Centre two years ago, but doesn’t know what its particular variety is other than it was from a plant he picked up at a garage sale.

The tomato measures more than 48 centimetres in circumference and tilts the scales at 1.25 kilograms.

Doumont’s big tomato is ultimately destined for the dinner table.

“I ate a couple smaller ones from the same vine last year and they’re pretty good,” Doumont said.
