Oak Bay police found a man in a car accident just hours after he was reported missing from Nanaimo.

Ray Bernoties, Oak Bay police deputy chief, said the missing man was unhurt after being involved in a minor vehicle collision Sunday. Bernoties said Oak Bay police were initially notified about a man driving suspiciously.

“And then there was a minor hit and run that he was involved in,” Bernoties said. “When our members ultimately located him they discovered that he was, in fact, a missing gentleman from Nanaimo, with some health issues.”

Police found the man at about 7:30 p.m. just over two hours after he had been listed missing by Nanaimo RCMP at about 5:20 p.m.

“Basically drive time down here,” Bernoties said.

Oak Bay police made arrangements to have the man brought back to Nanaimo. Bernoties said what could have been a serious situation worked out for the best in this case.

“While our member waited for his family to meet him in the West Shore area, our member bought him a coffee at the coffee shop,” he said. “So we tried to look after him. I mean, obviously it was a health issue and fortunately in this case it doesn’t appear that anyone was injured.”

The man has been reunited with his family and police are not contemplating charges.
