Postal boxes were broken into in Lantzville last week, according to the Nanaimo RCMP.

There were four mailboxes where there were break-ins or attempted breaks-ins overnight July 13 in the Lantzville area, including one reported on Northwind Drive.

“Every now and then we get it off and on and it usually comes towards times when Revenue Canada will be sending things out, return cheques, things like that, so just be cautious when you’re having things being mailed out,” said Nanaimo RCMP Sgt. Sarah Mattes, who said it’s the second occurrence this year that she’s aware of.

Thieves look for parcels, cash, cheques, credit cards and anything to be able to commit fraud, according to Mattes, who said breaking into Canada Post boxes is a crime itself, but so it stealing mail and any fraud or activity after that.

Const. Gary O’Brien, RCMP spokesman, suggests residents clear out mailboxes on a regular basis and try not to have valuables forwarded through the mail. A lot of thefts occur overnight, and O’Brien said any suspicious activity around mailboxes should be reported immediately to police. If there’s any sign of tampering with boxes, people can report it to the RCMP or Canada Post.

No one has called in to report anything missing from the latest break-ins.
