Four vehicles collided in Nanaimo next to a tow truck driver who had pulled over to reposition a car that had partly slid off the back of the flatbed truck.

The accident happened in the northbound lanes of the Island Highway just north of the Rutherford Road intersection at about 10 a.m on Tuesday.

At the scene, the tow truck driver said the car on his flatbed truck had shifted and he pulled over to the side of the road to reposition it. As he was working, several other cars started colliding in the northbound fast lane.

Emergency responders at the scene said no one was seriously injured, but two drivers were attended to at the scene by B.C. ambulance crews.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
