Paying property taxes in Lantzville has just gotten a little easier.

The District of Lantzville has introduced pre-authorized payment program for property tax accounts, giving residents the ability to prepay their property taxes for the following year through monthly payments, which will be withdrawn on the 10th day of each month between August and May.

Lynda Sowerby, deputy director of financial services, said the program is convenient for both residents and district staff.

“It’s convenient for people because they don’t have to come up with a lump sum payment at tax time. They can either pretty much have it all paid or a good portion of it all paid in advance,” she said. “It’s convenient for us because it is a regular process and it provides us with the ability to have funds on people’s accounts prior to the tax deadline and it avoids properties potentially getting into a penalty situation.”

Those who register have the option of selecting either a calculated monthly pre-payment or a fixed monthly pre-payment. The fixed option allows individuals to determine a set amount of money the district can withdraw each month while calculated monthly pre-payments are based on a variety of factors.

“We would calculate it based on your 2017 taxes,” Sowerby said. “It’s just an estimate of how much you should be setting aside each month so that your 2018 amount is paid and that would take into consideration any home owner grant.”

Those who sell their home after registering for the program will need to inform the district in order to cancel pre-payments. The district requires a written cancellation notice 10 days prior to the next scheduled pre-payment date.

Sowerby said in those situations, home owners can either contact the district or their lawyer for information on what to do.
