Motorists will feel another bump along Lantzville’s main road.

At Monday’s council meeting, Lantzville councillors voted unanimously to install a speed bump at the Huddlestone and Lantzville Road intersection, near Huddlestone Park.

There are currently two speed bumps in place along a 500-metre stretch of Lantzville Road, which runs through the village core.

Coun. Mark Swain said the speed bump will help slow southbound traffic heading into the village core.

“It’s really the most sensitive part of that road when you think about the little ones going to school and the park itself,” he said.

Fred Spears, director of public works, told councillors installing a speed bump would cost anywhere between $2,000 and $2,500 and would be paid for through the road maintenance budget.

“When something like this comes up, we can take from there because it is under our policy for capital projects, which is $10,000. That’s where the money comes from,” he said.

Coun. Denise Haime questioned whether another speed bump would be effective, but was supportive of the idea.

“Do you really think they are effective based on how fast people sail over these things? They get air,” she said.

But Spears said there will be some motorists who will drive fast and ignore the speed bumps regardless of signage and that the district cannot stop everyone from speeding.

“The folks that are actually speeding and trying to get air, no matter what we do we are not going to be able to stop them,” he said. “Police are probably the only ones who are going to be able to stop them.”

Coun. Bob Colclough said he’s in favour of the speed bump at Huddlestone Road, especially because it will be after a curve section of Lantzville Road.

“One of the things that I like about it is that it just around the corner. Right now people come around the corner quite quickly and then they are passing Huddlestone Park, which there are often kids playing there,” he said. “This will slow them down a little bit before they get there.”

Councillors Will Geselbracht and John Coulson were absent as was Mayor Colin Haime.
