Mayor Colin Haime will head to the Harbour City to talk water.

On Monday night, Lantzville councillors voted in favour of sending the mayor along with staff members to a future City of Nanaimo council meeting to speak about the district's intention to amend the current water agreement between the two municipalities. The district sent a letter to Nanaimo city council back in April, asking them about amending Section 14 of the agreement, which calls for new water connections to as many as 50 new developments per year. Lantzville is aiming to have the wording changed so that existing developments can be included.

Mayor Haime said that by attending a Nanaimo city council meeting, he along with district staff can provide clarification about why they want to make changes to the current water agreement.

Brad McRae, Lantzville's chief administrative officer, told councillors that the idea is to have the mayor attend a Nanaimo council meeting in June when city councillors debate the proposed amendment.

Coun. Denise Haime said having the mayor and staff speak to Nanaimo city councillors is a good idea."I don't think it could do any harm," Denise Haime said. "I think if anything it could help maybe speed up this process just because there has been some confusion over the water agreement over the last number of years. This could then allow questions to be asked right away."McRae is scheduled to meet Tracy Samra, the City of Nanaimo's chief administrative officer, later this week, when they will discuss a potential date for the Lantzville delegation to appear.reporter2@nanaimobulletin.comTwitter: @npescod
