Lantzville ends bike safety courses

Lack of interest results in cancellation

Lantzville has put the brakes on bike safety courses.

The District of Lantzville has decided to cancel its free bike safety course program for children and parents this year.

Fred Spears, director of public works for Lantzville, said the course’s instructors didn’t receive enough registrants for the program to be viable.

“They didn’t have enough interest in the bike safety course this year,” he said.

Lantzville had offered free cycling safety courses to children and parents throughout 2016. Courses were led by members of the Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition, who taught lessons such as what clothing to wear, how to transition from riding on the sidewalk to the road and what to do in situations where there are no dedicated bike lanes.

The district had allocated $1,000 in last year’s budget for the courses.
