Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island broke ground on the third phase of its Meadow Hill development in Nanaimo Wednesday.

The latest phase consists of a three-bedroom house and a two-bedroom, handicap-accessible house.

Prospective families must undergo vetting, demonstrate financial need and an ability to pay for the mortgage as well as contribute 500 sweat equity volunteer hours. The families are expected to be chosen by the end of May.

Vancouver Island University trades students will contribute to the construction.
