A minor mill fire sparked Nanaimo Fire Rescue to action Tuesday.

Firefighters responded at about 12:30 p.m. to the Coastland Wood Industries mill on Haliburton Street after a small fire broke out in some sawdust.

“There was a little bit of sawdust, not very much, on top of some I-beams that had caught and then it was just hard to get to, so it was a bit of a stubborn thing,” said Kevin Lillingston, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer.

Lillingston said damage was minor and the fire was caused by sparks from a grinder being used to do some repair work. The fire was noticed by safety personnel at the repair site.

“The fire watch person noticed it right away and they hit it with a fire extinguisher … It was just a stubborn thing. Not much to it, really,” he said.

No one was injured.
