A house fire in south Nanaimo has been deemed accidental by fire investigators.

The blaze broke out in a back room of a home at 223 Irwin St. shortly after noon today (April 28).

Three Nanaimo Fire Rescue trucks, B.C. Ambulance and RCMP responded to the blaze, which caused fire and smoke damage to the rear portion of the house.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

“We’re treating it as suspicious until it’s investigated,” said Martin Drakeley, assistant chief of operations, at the scene.

By mid afternoon Alan Millbank, fire prevention officer, said his investigation, which is continuing, indicated fire started accidentally.

“It’s an accidental fire; electrical cause,” Millbank said.

The story will be updated as further details become available.
