The Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition is boasting big gains for participation in Bike to Work and School Week 2017.

In a press release issued Friday, the coalition, which organized Bike to Work Week in Nanaimo, cited an all-time record of more than 800 cyclists that included 163 new riders who commuted by pedalling instead of pushing their cars’ gas pedals.

During Bike to Work Week, which finished with a wrap-up barbecue at Nanaimo District Secondary School on Friday, 12 celebration stations were located on the E & N Trail and other strategic bicycle routes, offering refreshments, free bike tune-ups, prizes and valuable tips and resources. Celebration station hosts included Island Health, Vancouver Island University, Cobs Breads, TD Bank, Country Grocer, CMHA, Madman McKay, PowerPlant, VéloFix and City of Nanaimo.

Funding for Bike to Work Week was provided by the city, B.C. government, Island Health, Nanaimo school district and other local sponsors.

The Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition is a non-profit organization that promotes better cycling-related facilities, education, motivation and celebration to help get more people riding bicycles. To learn more, please visit www.bikesense.org.
