Council considers LED application

The first LED sign application by a Nanaimo business has been submitted.

After a long and fiercely contested debate last winter that was eventually resolved by city council agreeing to consider LED sign applications on a case-by-case basis, the first LED sign application by a local business has been submitted.

KGZ Development Corp. has applied to have an LED sign approved for 418 Fitzwilliam St. According to the application, the sign will be used to advertise available rental space and will not scroll or feature any animation. The applicant says the sign meets Downtown Heritage Design Guidelines and has worked with the city's heritage planner to ensure it fits in with Old City Quarter requirements.

Council is considering the development variance permit.
