Nanaimo has tapped into an award for its South Fork Water Treatment Plant.

The City of Nanaimo and Associated Engineering won an award of merit in the civil and municipal infrastructure category during the 28th Annual Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala in Vancouver last week.

The awards, hosted by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies of British Columbia, recognize the innovation and technical excellence of member firms, a press release from the organization shows.

“The Awards for Engineering Excellence winners represent the best and brightest in our industry,” said Keith Sashaw, president and chief executive officer of the association. “The winning projects are some of the most impressive work we have seen from B.C.’s consulting engineers, who have been showcased on this stage for nearly three decades.”

An awards supplement by the association says Nanaimo’s water treatment plant is the largest, siphon-powered membrane filtration plant in North America and the use of the siphon rather than pumps, reduces the building footprint and saves capital, operating and maintenance costs.

Bill Sims, city manager of water resources, said in a City of Nanaimo press release, the city is honored to be recognized with the award for the plant. The project, “the largest infrastructure project built in a generation,” will serve the community for generations to come, he said.
