KARL YU/The News Bulletin Bob Tobin, left, Rob Lawrance, acting parks and open space planner with the City of Nanaimo, and Darrah Worledge, discuss the plan to add a picnic shelter.

The City of Nanaimo received input Saturday about placement of a picnic shelter at Colliery Dam Park.

There are two proposed areas near the old spillway and a public washroom, off a park entrance at Wakesiah Avenue and Sixth Street.

“It will be a metal prefab roof and posts going down,” said Al Britton, city manager of parks operations. “It will be clearly open so that there’s visual all the way through and then there’ll be picnic tables placed inside.”

Britton said $40,000 has been budgeted for the project. The structure itself is estimated to cost $20,000 to $26,000.

Brodie Tapp, said he frequents the park and said he hopes the shelter will help people enjoy the park and it is something he would take advantage of.

“With our child and our niece and nephew, we’re up here with our dog all the time, we swim in the summer,” he said.

Like Tapp, Bob Tobin uses the park a lot and is also in favour of the plan.

“More picnic tables and a shelter is good too because sometimes when it’s raining, it’s good to have a cover over you,” Tobin said.

Britton said next steps will include the city deciding which direction it wants to go and then putting together a plan to build the shelter.

Britton said there was positive feedback Saturday regarding the shelter going in.

“I was actually thinking that there may be some fight back to it, but it seems not,” said Britton.
