The City of Nanaimo is asking for feedback as it considers how to put together its new economic development committee.

According to a city press release, the economic development strategic planning committee will lead the creation of an economic development strategy for Nanaimo. City council decided at the end of 2016 to shut down the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation and replace it with an in-house structure.

“We want the strategic direction of the city’s efforts to be as wide-ranging as possible and don’t want to miss any current or upcoming sector of economic activity from participating in setting that direction,” said Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay in the press release. “I look forward to input from all sectors that add economic growth and value in the City of Nanaimo.”

The municipality hopes the committee’s makeup will be well-rounded with representation from numerous sectors, including forestry, agriculture, transportation and warehousing, manufacturing, commercial development, renewable energy, retail, health care, education, tourism, technology, construction, labour market and professional, scientific and technical fields.

“Industry experts who are passionate about our beautiful city and want to help shape its future are encouraged to put their names forward,” said Amrit Manhas, the city’s economic development officer.

Anyone with input into the makeup of the committee, please e-mail Bill.McKay@nanaimo.ca. Those wishing to be considered as a committee member are asked to fill out an online application at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/committeeapplication.
