Nanaimo RCMP are advising people to be aware after a 12-year-old boy was followed home by a stranger on Tuesday.

According to an RCMP press release, the boy was walking home along Rock City Road when he noted, near Opal Drive, that a man was walking behind him.

“The man yelled, ‘come here.’ The youth did not know who this person was; he began running and continued until he arrived at his nearby home. He hid on his property and noticed the male standing at the end of his driveway for a few minutes before leaving,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

The boy texted a friend, whose mother picked him up and took him to their home.

The unknown man is described as white, 30-40 years old, 5-foot-10 and very thin, with a black beard. He was wearing a black rain jacked, black tuque and dark-coloured jogging pants.

“It is unknown why the male followed the youth and yelled out to him. Without his version of events, his actions on the surface are troubling. For this reason we are very interested in speaking with him,” O’Brien said.

Anyone with information about the identity of the man is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
