A 42-foot yacht ran aground in Nanaimo harbour this weekend
Josh Minami, Nanaimo Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue spokesman, said the incident occurred at Satellite Reef on Saturday at around 9:30 a.m. Marine search and rescue, a vessel from the Nanaimo Port Authority and two boats from C-Tow Marine Assistance Ltd. were on scene, he said.
There were three people on the boat when marine search and rescue arrived. C-Tow pulled the boat off the reef, Minami said.
“It was a very low tide, it was probably less than a one-metre tide,” he said.
Edward Dahlgren, port authority director of operations and harbour master, said there were no injuries reported and the Grand Banks motor yacht was towed to Stones Marina.
“The vessel did discharge some diesel fuel into the water from her tank vents while listing over as tide went out,” Dahlgren said in an e-mail. “This was reported to [Canadian Coast Guard Marine Communications and Traffic Services] and Transport Canada. An over flight was conducted to determine quantity and nature of the spill.”
Dahlgren said Transport Canada is the agency that would investigate how the vessel came to rest on the well-marked and charted hazard.
“She did take on water through the rudder stock indicating damage. [The] incident has been reported and closed,” Dahlgren said.
