Trail growing cold for suspects in Nanaimo ice cream heist
Nanaimo Mounties are searching for suspects behind what could be described as a true cold case file.
Sometime overnight on March 4, someone stole 10 large pails of gelato ice cream from Waterfront Confections, an ice cream shop located at 90 Front St. on Nanaimo’s waterfront promenade.
The dessert, valued at about $700, was taken from a locked steel shipping container located beside the back door of the business.
“Somebody broke in, cracked the lock off and stole their ice cream,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
So far, police have no suspects, said O’Brien, who had no details about which gelato flavours were taken from the storage container, nor could he recall any prior cases of thefts of large quantities of ice cream in Nanaimo.
Asked what culprits would do with that much gelato, O’Brien said, “Eat it.”
