Crash rattles homes in Nanaimo's Hammond Bay neighbourhood
Homeowners in Nanaimo's Hammond Bay neighbourhood felt a big bump in the night after a car went out of control Wednesday.
The incident, involving a black Mazda car driven by a woman in her 40s, happened at about 10:30 p.m.
According to witnesses, the car was traveling on Hammond Bay near Vista View Crescent when it turned into a driveway, plowed into a dirt embankment and then suddenly reversed at full power across Hammond Bay Road. The car cut a swath of destruction as it crashed through a fence, roared across the back yard of a home at 4723 Vista View Cr., blasted through a second fence, launched off of a 2.5-metre stone retaining wall and landed on its passenger side on the rear deck of a home at 4727 Vista View Cr., partially collapsing the deck.
"We just heard this loud crash and I got up to take a look and saw this vehicle had gone through my fence and landed on my neighbour's deck,'" said Pat Krusto, of 4723 Vista View Cr. "It happened so fast. Just bang, crash and there she was. Crazy."
Firefighters helped the woman out of her car. She was treated at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for minor injuries and released later in the night, according to Nanaimo RCMP at the scene.
Towing crews called in a crane to lift the battered car off the home's deck and lower it onto an access road so it could towed away.
Const. Jon Stuart, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said in an e-mail the investigation is ongoing.
