Investigation launched after prisoner injured at Nanaimo RCMP cells

Independent Investigations Office is responding to Nanaimo after a prisoner was injured while being booked into a cell.

The investigation stems from a physical altercation that broke out while a prisoner was being processed into cells at Nanaimo RCMP detachment Sunday, shortly before 5 a.m. while a male prisoner was being transported to the cell block.

The male prisoner sustained facial injuries during the altercation and was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment.

The Independent Investigations Office was notified of the incident by Nanaimo RCMP and sent investigators to look into the incident Tuesday.
