Car crash claims life of 77-year-old Nanaimo woman

A 77-year-old woman died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Applecross Road Monday evening.

The crash happened at about 8:45 p.m. when the woman, who was driving north on the 6500 block of Applecross Road, and her car collided with another car that was merging into traffic.

Police said they believe the collision caused the woman to lose control of her car, which spun across the road and came to a stop after hitting a tree.

The victim was rushed to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, but later died.

Three occupants of the other vehicle were not injured and remained at the scene. Several pedestrians, who were in the area at the time, spoke with investigators.

B.C. Coroner's Service attended and is helping Nanaimo RCMP's Municipal Traffic Unit with its investigation.

The woman's family has been notified of her death, but the victim's name has not been released.

The investigation into the crash is continuing and Nanaimo RCMP is asking for any other potential witnesses to the crash to contact the RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit at 250-754-2345.
