Man slashed with knife in weekend fight

Police have recommended a charge of assault with a weapon against one man following a weekend fight that broke out in Harewood.

Mounties responded to a residence on Carlisle Street Saturday at about midnight when neighbours reported a fight and that one person appeared to have been stabbed and bleeding.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said five people had been drinking heavily when an argument broke out resulting in two men kicking and punching a third man.

“[Police] found a victim holding a towel to his arm with a large wound on his arm,” O’Brien said.

The injured man was allegedly one of the two men beating up on a third individual who pulled out a knife in an apparent attempt to stop the assault.

Four people in the party, all in their early twenties, were arrested at the scene.

Two of them are facing recommended charges of assault and for breaching previous court conditions for consuming alcohol. Police have recommended a charge of assault with a weapon against the man who allegedly pulled the knife.

“At this point we’re recommending these charges,” O’Brien said. “It’s up to the courts to decide whether these charges will go through.”

One suspect was held in custody to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Monday. The remaining suspects were released on promises to appear in provincial court June 10.
