Investigation into cause of vehicle fire turned over to Nanaimo RCMP

A suspicious vehicle fire was turned over to Nanaimo RCMP for investigation Monday.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue was alerted to the fire, which appeared to have been set on the exterior of a GMC Yukon SUV parked at a home on the 3300 block of Hammond Bay Road, shortly before 2:30 a.m.

Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said the homeowner snuffed out the flames with a fire extinguisher before the fire spread too far and there was limited damage to the SUV.

A vehicle fire on the 900 block of Bowen Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday was due to a mechanical failure.
