Province advised of dam progress
Nanaimo city officials have warned the province it could take up to two years to find a final solution to the Colliery dams. Nanaimo city council met with the B.C. minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations in Vancouver Wednesday during the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention.
Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan said city council updated Minister Steve Thomson on its short-term mitigation plan for the Colliery dams. Council members also warned Thomson that a long-term solution for the dams is a complicated issue and could take up to two years to achieve.
Ruttan had hoped to get input from Thomson on the future of the Colliery dams, but said the meeting was more of an information session and only 12 minutes long.
“The minister did acknowledge it’s a very difficult situation ... and said his ministry would work with us as closely as possible,” Ruttan said.
