Chuckwagon market robbery attempt goes sideways
RCMP bagged the suspects involved in an attempted armed robbery in Yellow Point after their getaway car crashed in Nanaimo on the weekend.
The series of incidents leading up to the arrests started about 10:30 p.m. Friday when Ladysmith RCMP responded to an attempted armed robbery at the Chuckwagon Market, located at the south intersection of Cedar and Yellow Point roads, after a man walked into the store, produced a large knife and demanded the clerk hand over cash. That plan fell apart when the clerk recognized the suspect and spoke to him causing the suspect to run out of the store.
Police arrived moments later and found a vehicle in the store's parking lot believed to be related to the robbery. The car departed at a high rate of speed, followed by police who were unable to safely catch up with the car and broke off the chase.
Police eventually caught up with the car about two hours later when it was involved in a crash on the 2100 block of Maxey Road in Nanaimo at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
Mounties arrested two suspects at the crash scene, but the man police believe is responsible for the attempted robbery is still at large.
Charges related to the robbery are pending against a 45-year-old Nanaimo man and the 21-year-old Langford man who was driving the car. Police requested a warrant for the arrest of a 20-year-old Nanaimo man who is still at large.
RCMP from Ladysmith, Nanaimo and the Island District General Investigation Section are continuing with the investigation.
