Divers clean up submerged garbage

Scuba divers will head underwater to help clean up garbage and other sunken objects to help mark Earth Day (April 21).

Underwater Clean Up 2013, hosted by Nanaimo Underwater Clean-up Committee, is a not-for-profit, volunteer based event at the dive site near the Nanaimo Yacht Club.

Volunteers above water will be removing, sorting and recycling the found materials.

Prizes and a free barbecue will be available for volunteers.

To participate, show up at 9 a.m. at the yacht club, 400 Newcastle Ave., for registration. The event runs until 3 p.m.
